Dr. Riello discussed why Indian cottons were such a popular commodity first in India and later across most parts of the world. He highlighted the comparative advantages of Indian manufactures viz‐à‐viz the development of ‘local’ cotton textile industries in areas as different as Japan, Western Europe and West Africa. He concluded by considering the role of cotton textiles in narratives of economic divergence between Asia and Europe.
